Island Peak & Ama Dablam
Sep. 26th - Nov. 10th 2005
Samuli
Mansikka and Tuomas Sovijärvi spent their
autumn 2005 scaling two 6000 meter peaks located
inside Mount Everest National Park in the valley
of Khumbu in Nepal. They first climbed the 6183
meter high Island Peak to acclimitize themselves
for alpine style attempt of Ama Dablam's (6856
m.) SW Ridge.
However, Ama Dablam did not let the two reach
the summit during their first attempt; The closing
weather front and news about unusually thick snowpack
above camp III made Samuli and Tuomas retreat
to base camp and attempt again with camps I and
II fixed the previous time. The guys summitted
in cold and cloudy weather on Oct. 20th.
Samuli's and Tuomas' original plan also included
nearby Cholatse (6440 m.) for which they had obtained
the permit. It was, however left to wait the future
trips to the area.
Ama
Dablam is often said to be one of, if not the
most beautiful mountain in the world. The SW ridge
is an exceptionally elegant and interesting route
to the summit and as a full scale expedition peak
it makes a perfect choice for one's first Himalayan
objective.
